What are AAAA records?

Back to dns

AAAA records are the IP version 6 variant of A records. With this type of record you refer a (sub)domain to an IP version 6 address.

When the DNS is accessed by an application (a browser or an application), it will return both the A record and AAAA records present. Depending on the application, either the IPv4 or the IPv6 address will be used.

If you have not set up IPv6 addresses, the application can theoretically fall back to IPv4. The prerequisite is that the application is prepared for this.
