What does the clientTransferProhibited status mean?

Back to domains

Introduction:
All generic tlds, for example .com, .shop, .info, .biz have a lock option.
This is an extra protection so that if someone does have the transfer code who should not have it, it is still not possible to move the domain name away unintentionally.
You can manage the lock yourself by logging into your domain name management environment.
In the Whois you can see if a domain name has a lock, if so you will see at status: clientTransferProhibited.
If there is no lock on the domain name, status: OK, in that case the lock will not apply to the domain name transfer.

The status'clientTransferProhibited' can be traced to two causes:

  1. When the domain has the status'clientTransferProhibited' the domain cannot be moved by the new registrar. You can check if it is possible to remove the lock yourself via the website of the current registrar, if the other registrar does not have this possibility you can contact them and request to deactivate the LOCK. Once the lock is deactivated the transfer can be requested again.
  2. ICANN has a transfer/registration policy. A domain name may not be transferred or registered by a registrar for the first 60 days after transfer or registration. Therefore, it is not possible to move a domain name within 2 months after registration or a transfer. In this case, you have to wait until the 60 days are over.
