Can I still connect to the old server after moving?
Back to web hostingWhen moving hosting providers, if you apply the wrong order, you may end up with no data from your website and/or email.
For example, because you forgot to include emails in the backup.
The domain is then already moved, so you can no longer access the old server.
It is therefore always important to start with a backup.
When there is no longer a link to the old hosting, it is difficult to retrieve data from the old server / other party afterwards.
Fortunately, there are several ways how you can still connect to the old server.
Connect to the other server based on ip address
When you requested the package, you probably received an email from your hosting party that mentioned an ip address.
You can use this ip address to make a connection by using it as host for filezilla (FTP) or as server for the mail.
Should the program have trouble with this because it has to be a name, you can: either create a DNS record, for example oud.domeinnaam.nl and point it to the old ip address, or use the hostname as described below.
The ip address can often be found in your control panel in the DNS settings.
Connecting to the other server based on hostname
Every server must have a hostname, this is a self made up name which makes it easier for configuration files to know which server it is.
For example, reverse DNS is often linked to a hostname.
When you perform a traceroute in windows, by left clicking on the windows icon, and clicking on execute, then type cmd, and then press enter you can then enter the command: tracert exampledomain.nl or tracert ip-address, of course you must replace exampledomain.nl by your own domain name or ip-address by the server ip address, if you then press enter the first and last line returns the hostname).
Look up hostname in satserver (reseller)
If you have a reseller package with us, you can find the hostname by logging into www.satserver.nl.
Once you are logged into satserver, click on Report -> domains overview, then click the create button.
On the right side you will see the server (hostname). You can use this at host when asked to specify that. (Think incoming mailserver, outgoing mailserver or ftp host).
Can't find both the ip address and hostname?
If you still can't find the hostname and/or ip address, ask your old party to provide them.
