How do I set up email correctly on my ipad or iphone

Back to email

Introduction
We regularly have contact with customers who have problems with their email.
It is striking that this often causes problems especially with iphone / ipad and imac users.
This can also be explained because there is an option in OSX that automatically looks up and forces the settings.
The problem with this is that OSX forces a secure connection.
As a result, you keep getting asked if you trust the server identity.
First of all, that's not nice and secondly, it can also cause problems, such as a temporary ip blockade which temporarily prevents you from receiving mail.
So it is important to set this up properly.

Can I use the automatic setting option of OSX?
You can, just make sure that an SSL certificate is actually installed for the mail server.
We have several articles that explain how to install an SSL certificate.
How to install it depends on what control panel you use, for example SATserver or DirectAdmin and whether you want to use a free or paid certificate for this.

Click here for the SATserver article with a paid certificate.
Click here for the SATserver article in combination with a free let's encrypt certificate.
Click here for the DirectAdmin article with a free certificate.

Once you have an SSL certificate active, you should no longer receive an error message about the server identity.
If you still get an error message about the server identity, check if there are other email accounts present on other accounts that do not yet have an SSL certificate active.

Problems receiving E-mail
Make sure the correct mail settings are being used.
Using incorrect data can (and will) cause temporary blocking.
Therefore, check carefully that you are using the correct mail server (mail.exampledomain.com) and perhaps more importantly that you are using the correct ports in combination with the correct encryption.
Use SSL only when an SSL certificate is installed for mail.exampledomain.co.uk).
Make sure this is set up properly for all devices on your network, if 1 device uses incorrect data it will affect all your devices, including those that do log in properly.

Problems with sending E-mail
This is another problem that occurs frequently with mac users.
The reason is that OSX indicates that for outgoing mail the username and password are optional.
Therefore, it is logical to think that you can skip this, however, that is where it goes wrong.
Our servers do require authentication for sending email, and it is therefore mandatory to fill out these fields.
For the username, use your email address and email account password.

Still having problems with the mail, check if any program can block it
Check to see if any AIS (all in one security, antivirus, firewall and more) can cause it to block certain ports.
Turn it off temporarily if necessary to see if it improves, if so check the settings to see if you can turn off email security or set it up so it doesn't cause problems.

Still having problems?
OSX stores data like login credentials and SSL certificates in their keychain program.
Search on the email address and check that the password is set properly.
If the password is different than the one it should be, change it.
Try restarting the mail program.
If this does not improve things, re-add the account if it is an IMAP email account.
This will not affect the mail because IMAP reads the mails from the server.
If you are currently using a POP3 account, it is very wise to check carefully that the mails remain on the server as soon as you read mails. Otherwise, you will lose the email.

If the above settings still do not work, please let our support know.
