NIS2 and the impact on domain names: What resellers need to know
To overviewIn a world where cybersecurity and data protection are increasingly important, the European Union has introduced the NIS2 Directive. This legislation, which came into force this year, aims to further strengthen the security of digital services and infrastructures. But what does this mean concretely for domain names, and especially for you as a reseller?
What is NIS2?
NIS2 stands for the Network and Information Systems Directive version 2. This new version expands the existing regulations and provides a strengthened approach to cyber threats. It sets stricter requirements for organizations offering digital services and applies to a broader group of companies, including domain registration and hosting providers.
What measures does NIS2 entail?
For domain name and hosting providers like us, NIS2 means, among other things, that we will have more stringent transparency and security requirements. These include keeping current and accurate data on domain name holders and timely notification of security breaches.
Here are some of the measures under NIS2:
- Increased monitoring of WHOIS data
Domain name holders are expected to have to provide more information to ensure their data is current and accurate. - Prompt(er) notification of security incidents
If a security incident occurs, it must be reported immediately to the relevant authorities. - Stricter verification of data
There will be stricter requirements for verifying domain name holders, with the aim of preventing the misuse of domain names. - Stricter requirements
There will be stricter requirements for the security of network and information systems. All NIS2 organizations will have to improve their cybersecurity. - A chain duty of care is in effect
The more than 10,000 NIS2 organizations and companies are required by NIS2 Article 21.2d to ensure the security of the chain of which they are a part. Based on the risk in the supply chain, they will have to impose cybersecurity measures on their suppliers. That group of suppliers of 50,000 companies will also be digitally secure. - Increased monitoring and enforcement
Measures are being introduced to ensure compliance with the NIS2 directive, including financial penalties for non-compliance.
